Who We Are

Mission: To be a coalition of community interests dedicated to working cooperatively for the improvement of the Muskegon Lake ecosystem, and for the delisting of Muskegon Lake as an Area of Concern.

Founded in 1993, the Muskegon Lake Watershed Partnership is a non-profit, community-based, volunteer partnership organization that collaborates with grassroots, local, state, regional, federal and international partners, meets monthly, and plans and implements programs to restore Muskegon Lake and its tributaries to a healthy Great Lakes ecosystem. In 2018, the MLWP developed the Muskegon Lake Action Plan to help prioritize and guide future watershed actions.

We are a proud group of local citizens with various backgrounds including diverse stakeholders such as environmental professionals, residents, Muskegon Lake landowners, scientists, professors, business professionals, outdoor enthusiasts, stewards, creatives, retirees and concerned citizens. It is also important to us to strive for a racially and ethnically diverse representational balance. Our monthly public meetings are listed on our website and publicized on our Facebook page and groups and are open to the public. Join us in making a positive difference for Muskegon and for future generations!

What We Do

The MLWP’s focus area is the immediate drainage area of Muskegon Lake as well as Cedar and Mosquito Creeks. The MLWP is organized exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes and is a coalition of community interests dedicated to working cooperatively for the improvement of the Muskegon Lake ecosystem, and for the delisting of Muskegon Lake as an Area of Concern. The MLWP obtains and disseminates information concerning Muskegon Lake watershed issues, provides a forum for discussion of those issues, and initiates, facilitates, and/or coordinates plans and actions to improve the Muskegon Lake ecosystem.

Volunteers make up the core of the MLWP. Volunteers set goals, plan projects and monitor them. Volunteers are needed to adopt habitats and care for them through a variety of hands-on, maintenance and monitoring activities. Volunteer steward groups provide opportunities to participate and take pride in the protection of our local community and our environmental assets.
