Volunteer: Fair Housing Testers

What is a Tester?

As a tester, you play the role of a home seeker - a person who is looking for a housing unit in which to live. Testers must be at least 18 years old, objective, careful observers, accurate reporters, and truthful and credible witnesses.  View the Qualifications for Testers for more information on what characteristics are important in a tester.

Testers are paid a stipend for both remote and in-person tests.

Become a Tester

Our housing tester program is an interesting way to learn about the community and get first hand experience with fair housing.  Testers play the role of a home seeker and participate in apartment showings, open houses, and other experiences to help us monitor fair housing practices.  Testers are of vital importance to the advocacy and research programs of the Fair Housing Center.  Without a vast and diverse pool of volunteer testers, the Fair Housing Center would be drastically limited in our ability to conduct research and investigate claims of illegal discrimination.

What is Testing?

Testing is a term used to describe the process of checking the housing market to determine the nature and extent of discriminatory treatment practiced against various home seekers. For example, in matched pair testing two or more individuals, similar in every respect other than the variable being tested, are sent to the same sales or rental office. Testers keep careful notes as to what transpires, and then record their experience on a standard report form. Differences in the treatment of testers often form the bases for successful resolution of a housing discrimination complaint.

Why Testing?

The testing process has been consistently supported by federal courts as a legitimate and necessary method to identify practices of unlawful housing discrimination. In West Michigan, successful complaints filed by claimants have been based upon evidence obtained by Fair Housing Center testers.

How Do I Become a Tester?

If you are interested in taking on the challenging and rewarding role of a tester, email us to learn about upcoming tester training dates.  To register for a tester training via phone, or for more information about testing, contact Sarah Brandt at (616) 438-5712.

Volunteer: Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Volunteer-Oceana County

There are children in the Oceana County Court system that need Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers. CASAs are assigned by the judge to represent the best interest of children in abuse and neglect court proceedings. The volunteer visits with the child regularly, researches the background of the child, prepares written reports for the Court and attends hearings until the case is permanently resolved. CASA volunteers are a constant for children in a time of chaos. A child may have multiple social workers, foster care placements, therapists, and teachers throughout the life of the case but only one CASA volunteer.

Children with a CASA are more likely to: be placed in a permanent safe home faster, do better in school, and receive comprehensive services needed.

Must be at least 21 years of age, have a High School diploma/equivalent, pass background & reference checks, attend an interview, complete 30 hours of pre-service training, have reliable transportation, and time (10-15 hours per month).

Volunteer: Veterans History Project

What You Need:  A veteran in your community An audio or video recording device  scanner or copier for photographs  The Veterans History Project Instruction Booklet (Download Here)  What You Do:

This project is a project that requires several forms to be filled out but is relatively easy to complete. Essentially you walk through the Veterans History Project Instruction Booklet step by step to conduct an interview with your local veteran. You come up with prompts, record the interview, collect copies of any photographs or memorabilia, and have all forms and paperwork filled out.

You can then either forward that information to the United Way of the Lakeshore, or you can send the documents to the Library of Congress.

This project is a great way to spend time with some of our greatest community members (our veterans!) and record local history.

Veterans History Project:

The Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.

The Veterans History Project (VHP) of the Library of Congress American Folklife Center collects and preserves the firsthand interviews and narratives of the United States military veterans from World War I through the present. In addition to audio- and video-recorded oral history interviews, VHP accepts memoirs and collections of original photographs, letters, diaries, maps and other historical documents from veterans who served in the US armed services from World War I through the present. The Project makes accessible the materials that comprise this important national archive, which contains submissions from every state, and includes the US territories. VHP relies on volunteers, both individuals, and organizations, throughout the nation to contribute veterans’ stories to VHP.

VHP also collects oral histories with Gold Star Family members, defined as a parent, spouse, sibling, or child of members of the Armed Forces who died as a result of their service during a period of war.

The Need In Our Community:

Currently, the Veterans History Project only has 5 servicemen listed from the Lakeshore. None of these soldiers have their pictures available. This is a great opportunity to preserve not only Community History but to preserve the family history of those in our community as well.

Volunteer: VITA Volunteer

VITA VOLUNTEER:

To help workers claim the EITC and other tax credits, the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to low-to-moderate income working for families with the help of trained volunteers. Goodwills across the country are currently training hundreds of volunteers to help members of their community to prepare their taxes this season.
“I really do think it impacts the community, and I like to give back,” explains Paulette Johnson, a VITA volunteer. “Even though I don’t have a lot of money, I like to share my knowledge and time.  It is really rewarding when people come in that weren’t expecting to get money back.”
By volunteering as a VITA tax preparer in your community, you can gain free tax training, earn a certification from the IRS and gain applicable skills to advance your career.  “We have had several of our VITA volunteers get jobs because of their tax preparation experience here at our site,” says Kirby Kaple, financial services specialist at Goodwill Industries of Southern Rivers (Columbus, GA).
This great volunteer opportunity can help you:

Learn about up-to-date tax preparation rules that can lead to a job with public or private organizations. Build data entry skills that apply to numerous job positions in the workforce. Gain experience in customer service and one-on-one client consultations. Demonstrate a commitment to community service and help you leverage your volunteer work with prospective employers.

Even if you aren’t interested in tax preparation, VITA sites offer many volunteer positions that can enhance your résumé and help members of your community:

Speak a second language? Help taxpayers of all languages take advantage of free tax preparation as a translator. Are you a smart saver?  Promote financial best practices and products to help clients make the most of their tax refund and build their assets. Know your way around the latest technology?  Provide computer and software support to help your local VITA site run smoothly and get refunds back to taxpayers fast. Have great organizational skills? Serve as a receptionist to greet clients, file paperwork and schedule appointments at your local VITA site.

To find your local VITA site and learn about VITA volunteer opportunities, go to VolunteerMatch or contact your local Goodwill.

Volunteer: Volunteer Mediators

With the aid of a grant from the State Supreme Court, the Community Dispute Resolution Program offers mediation, and other forms of dispute resolution, as alternatives to formal litigation. Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) offers many advantages when compared to the typical court process. For example, individuals are given the opportunity to actively participate in the resolution of disputes, relationships are often improved or maintained, costs are minimal, and the community benefits from a peaceful resolution of individual problems. At the same time, the agreements that arise from mediation are as binding as a decree from the courts.

Our volunteer mediators mediate a wide variety of disputes. Neighborhood problems, parenting-time and custody issues, merchant-consumer complaints, civil-rights cases, restorative justice programs in juvenile court, general civil and small claims matters, and any other type of dispute that you can imagine are resolved through this process.

Volunteer mediators must complete a 40-hour, court-approved training program and 10 hours of observation before they mediate cases. Additional advanced mediation is available for those interested. This specialized training allows mediators to work in Special Education, Balanced and Restorative Justice, Adult-Guardianship, and other specific areas.

Volunteer: Public Policy/Advocate for Change

MADD Michigan is currently working to get volunteers, victims, and survivors engaged in passing an All Offender Ignition Interlock Law, and ending the Sunset Clause for .08 BAC. An ignition interlock is a device about the size of a cell phone that is wired into the ignition system of a vehicle.  A convicted drunk driver must blow into the device in order to start their vehicle.  If they have a measurable amount of alcohol in their system, the vehicle will not start. 34 states and Washington DC have passed this law already, and Michigan has not passed the law, it is currently sitting in the Michigan House of Representatives.

Did you know that Michigan is the only state with a Sunset Clause for the .08 Blood Alcohol Content for stopping Impaired Drivers? A sunset law is also known as the sunset provision and it is a legal provision that has an expiration date for a government program, agency, or law on a certain date unless it is renewed. The Michigan Legislature has approved bills that will continue that state’s 0.08 blood-alcohol limit for drunk driving until 2021. The limit of 0.8 was set in 2003, however, a sunset provision has been put on it means that the law has to be revisited and amended when the deadline comes around or the law is no longer in place. Under the latest legislation, the limit is going to go back up from 0.8 to 0.10 in October 2021. Our goal is to end the Sunset Clause and have a new law that would have .08 be a law that never has to be debated again.

It will take volunteers of all commitments and skill levels to help us create stronger laws to end impaired driving in Michigan.  From Leadership Roles to Contacting Your Legislator, there will be multiple ways for you to get involved. Public Policy volunteers would assist staff by engaging the public and legislators through educating them on the law. Public Policy volunteers also spread awareness of MADD’s legislative agenda throughout their communities, and communicate MADD’s legislative agenda to their legislators and encourage legislators and community leaders to support MADD’s legislative priorities.

VIP Volunteers are one of our longest running volunteer opportunities. MADD Michigan has 15+ panels that occur monthly and are in person volunteer opportunities. Typical volunteers are assigned 1-2 panels in their area for the calendar year. This is a great opportunity for folks looking for evening availability and seek consistency. This is a monthly commitment, and we ask you to please commit to the end of the calendar year.    Life is forever changed after an impaired driving crash. One way MADD focuses efforts on preventing the deaths, injuries, and devastation from occurring is to educate people about the consequences of impaired driving. Victim impact panels (VIPs) allow victims/survivors an opportunity to heal by sharing their personal stories of bereavement, injuries, and loss with an audience of receptive participants. Volunteer victim impact panel coordinators play an important part in helping to reduce future victimizations through presenting effective VIPs that educate participants to the hazards of impaired driving and motivate participants to make responsible decisions about drinking and driving in the future.   This opportunity requires a background check and is not available to those who have received a DUI or OWI.

Volunteer: Blood Donor Ambassador: Mason & Oceana Counties

Blood Donor Ambassador: Mason and Oceana Counties

Ready to make an impact? We need friendly and enthusiastic people just like you who can represent the Red Cross to our blood donors.

As a volunteer blood donor ambassador, you'll ensure donors have a positive experience from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave. Your professionalism and kindness during the blood drive will encourage ongoing donor support.

This role is for you if you…

· Love talking to all kinds of people!

· Demonstrate excellent customer service and comfort working with people.

· You have availability to serve for one 4-6 hour shift per month.

*shifts may vary on quarterly needs depending on your location*

Each volunteer shift, you make a difference and help save a life.

This opportunity requires participation in in-person activities and/or performing work in a Red Cross facility.

Key responsibilities –

Overview of Mobile Blood Drives

· Usually hosted at a community or sponsor-owned location

· Blood collection procedures are whole blood and red cell (no platelets or plasma)

· ‘Mobile’ blood drives change almost every day—with the need to setup and takedown each blood drive, they tend to be faster paced, in a variety of sites, with different donors, sponsors, team members, and chargeperson each drive

· Often requires careful maintenance of donor flow and wait times (typically more donors on the schedule)

· Events confirmed about 6 weeks in advance

Overview of Fixed Sites

· Usually hosted at a community or sponsor-owned location

· Blood collection procedures are whole blood and red cell (no platelets or plasma)

· Staff and equipment tend to be ‘ready to go’ in the same site each day--with fewer donors participating on a frequent basis in longer term procedures (some procedures take as long as 2-2.5 hours per donor) at a Red Cross donor center.

· Similar or same: list of donors, team members and charge people from week to week creates sense of team

· Regular donors become familiar with check-in process, materials and site

· Schedule rarely changes, available several months in advance, a weekly shift ‘adoption’ is highly encouraged. For example – one shift every Tuesday morning or afternoon

All Donor Ambassador roles (Mobile Blood Drives and Fixed Sites)

· Support Red Cross staff by being helpful, flexible, and patient

· Greet donors, explain the donation process as necessary and assist with initial intake and hand offs through the blood donation process

· Manage donor flow and direct donors to Check-In

· Model excellent customer service behaviors.

· Ensure blood donors have relevant information and that questions are answered appropriately while creating a favorable impression of the blood donation process.

· Learn and share the Red Cross story, including the mission, vision, and values

· Work with collections team supervisor or charge staff to match donor’s blood type with the best product for maximum impact (Right Type Mix)

· Check Post Donation Info and time

· Set up and maintain cleanliness in Reception and Hospitality Areas

· Provide customer service to donors in the Hospitality Area by ensuring that each donor is recognized for his/her contribution.

· Check that donor has their post-donation information before leaving the drive

· Report possible adverse post-donation physical reactions to the collections staff. Protect donors from injury during adverse reactions (if able without hurting self)

· May be asked to sanitize/disinfect donor areas and beds

· May make reminder/cancellation calls, re-schedule donor appointments, and perform follow up activities as directed

· Encourage donors to download Donor App, use RapidPass

Volunteer: Emotional Support Listeners (7Cups) - Volunteer From Home

About 7 Cups

We live in a world where you can be surrounded by people, but still feel lonely, with nobody to turn to when things get rough.

But being heard is an important part of being human. Psychologist, Glen Moriarty saw that there was great power in listening, but he knew not everyone had someone to talk to. He started to wonder. “How can I make being heard a reality for everyone?”

That’s why 7 Cups was born.

Thanks to thousands of volunteer listeners stepping up to lend a friendly ear, 7 Cups is happy to say, “We’re here for you!”

No matter who you are or what you’re going through, this is a place where you’ll be heard and cared for. We might be strangers on the surface, but underneath we’re just the friends you haven’t met yet.

Chat online with caring listeners

Need to talk to someone? Our trained volunteer listeners are available 24/7 to give emotional support over online chat.

It’s anonymous and completely free.

When you need someone to talk to, we’re here to listen and help you feel better.

We are building a world-class listening service made up of compassionate, caring individuals like you. Thank you for offering to lend an ear to those in need of support. How does it work?

Getting started as an active listener is easy and rewarding in many ways. You’re in complete control over your displayed availability, so you can listen as often as you like.

Volunteer: Smithsonian Digital Volunteers!

Digital Volunteers Smithsonian Digital Volunteers at a Wikipedia Editathon

The Smithsonian benefits from the work of thousands of passionate volunteers who support the organization on-site in our museums, zoo, and other facilities.

Today, digital technology makes it possible for people who believe in the Smithsonian mission to make significant contributions online. "Digital Volunteers" can now take on important assignments to expand access to the Smithsonian's massive collections, and can participate in a variety of research programs. Some roles require special knowledge or skill, but many do not.

Selected opportunities are described below.

Smithsonian Transcription Center

Launched in July 2013, the Smithsonian Transcription Center seeks to engage the public in making our collections more accessible. Citizen scholars are invited to transcribe historic documents including diaries and working papers of prominent Americans and records associated with the Smithsonian's vast scientific collections. Transcription makes these important materials more accessible to researchers around the world, as well as the general public.

To date, more than ten thousand citizen scholars have come to the Transcription Center and engaged with the wide array of documents posted there by Smithsonian archivists and curators—from field notebooks surveying snakes and reptiles in South Dakota in 1894 to the diaries of Leo Baekeland, the American chemist and founder of the modern plastics industry.

To learn more about this opportunity and get involved as a citizen scholar, visit the Smithsonian Transcription Center.

Smithsonian Wikipedian Volunteer Program

The Smithsonian seeks digital volunteers to assist in contributing content to Wikipedia related to our collections and areas of expertise. Improving the quality and quantity of reliable information on Wikipedia, as well as usage of Smithsonian resources on the site, helps meet our mission, the "increase and diffusion of knowledge." We seek experienced and motivated Wikipedia editors who are technically proficient in both the software and the norms of the Wikimedia community. To find out more about how to become a Wikipedia volunteer for the Smithsonian, visit the Smithsonian Institution's WikiProject.

Volunteer: New Beginnings Volunteer Mentor

What is New Beginnings?

New Beginnings is a jail-based program providing workforce and life development services, mentoring, and support to women in the Kent County, Ottawa County, and Muskegon County jails. The program's purpose is to reduce the likelihood that a woman will return to jail after release.

Why volunteer?

Volunteer mentors play a critical role in helping women successfully re-enter the community and avoid re-incarceration. Research shows a dramatic drop in the recidivism rate for women who have mentor support post-release. We offer extensive training for New Beginnings mentors, and we ask that mentors make a one-year commitment. Every woman participating in the program receives a trained female mentor. The participant and mentor develop a positive relationship that provides support while in jail and after release. New Beginnings mentors provide genuine, caring, non-judgmental support while also offering accountability as program participants work to achieve their goals.

Additional benefits include:

training and support to facilitate a successful mentoring experience. the opportunity to develop sincere long-lasting relationships with a participant. provide participants with safe communication, free from judgement. Be a source of positive encouragement to justice-involved women. access to networking opportunities with other mentors.

Questions about the program?

Contact Brittany Schultz, mentor coordinator, with any questions at 616-410-0780 or bschultz@grwrc.org.

Some of our volunteers help enrich the lives of our patients by serving as a Direct Care Volunteer serves as an additional support to patients and families dealing with a terminal illness and end-of-life issues. Support is provided in a variety of ways, including the provision of companionship and socialization to patients, or offering respite to stressed caregivers. Direct Care Volunteers may also make calls to patients and families ensuring they have the supplies they need for the weekend.

Additionally, we have Administrative Volunteers who provide support to office personnel through clerical and administrative functions. An administrative volunteer may assist with answering telephones, filing, making copies, data entry or helping to create admission packets. They might help with compiling and mailing Bereavement letters, sympathy cards or the planning of the Annual Memorial Service.

As a volunteer, you would help us decide which tasks you are comfortable performing.
