Many communities are unaware of MADD Victim Services and how MADD helps victims/survivors of impaired driving. Volunteer outreach and communications specialists help to enhance community awareness of MADD Victim Services. By building relationships, educating the community, and connecting community members with needed services, outreach and communications volunteers help to solidify the presence of MADD Victim Services in all communities, thereby ensuring that victims/survivors receive the support they need.

Skills/Training Requirements: completion of MADD orientation, good organizational skills, ability to communicate effectively, reliable transportation and comfortable approaching community organizations to establish and strengthen networks.

–Help with Research on Ways to Help Spread Awareness of MADD Victim Services

MADD Victim Services offers many ways for victims/survivors to remember and honor those killed or injured in impaired driving crashes. Special events volunteers assist in planning, organizing, and implementing of special events for victims/survivors.

Overview of Mobile Blood Drives

· Usually hosted at a community or sponsor-owned location

· Blood collection procedures are whole blood and red cell (no platelets or plasma)

· ‘Mobile’ blood drives change almost every day—with the need to setup and takedown each blood drive, they tend to be faster paced, in a variety of sites, with different donors, sponsors, team members, and chargeperson each drive

· Often requires careful maintenance of donor flow and wait times (typically more donors on the schedule)

· Events confirmed about 6 weeks in advance

Overview of Fixed Sites

· Usually hosted at a community or sponsor-owned location

· Blood collection procedures are whole blood and red cell (no platelets or plasma)

· Staff and equipment tend to be ‘ready to go’ in the same site each day--with fewer donors participating on a frequent basis in longer term procedures (some procedures take as long as 2-2.5 hours per donor) at a Red Cross donor center.

· Similar or same: list of donors, team members and charge people from week to week creates sense of team

· Regular donors become familiar with check-in process, materials and site

· Schedule rarely changes, available several months in advance, a weekly shift ‘adoption’ is highly encouraged. For example – one shift every Tuesday morning or afternoon

All Donor Ambassador roles (Mobile Blood Drives and Fixed Sites)

· Support Red Cross staff by being helpful, flexible, and patient

· Greet donors, explain the donation process as necessary and assist with initial intake and hand offs through the blood donation process

· Manage donor flow and direct donors to Check-In

· Model excellent customer service behaviors.

· Ensure blood donors have relevant information and that questions are answered appropriately while creating a favorable impression of the blood donation process.

· Learn and share the Red Cross story, including the mission, vision, and values

· Work with collections team supervisor or charge staff to match donor’s blood type with the best product for maximum impact (Right Type Mix)

· Check Post Donation Info and time

· Set up and maintain cleanliness in Reception and Hospitality Areas

· Provide customer service to donors in the Hospitality Area by ensuring that each donor is recognized for his/her contribution.

· Check that donor has their post-donation information before leaving the drive

· Report possible adverse post-donation physical reactions to the collections staff. Protect donors from injury during adverse reactions (if able without hurting self)

· May be asked to sanitize/disinfect donor areas and beds

· May make reminder/cancellation calls, re-schedule donor appointments, and perform follow up activities as directed

· Encourage donors to download Donor App, use RapidPass

Meetings are on the last Wednesday of each month.

Every day, sighted volunteers lend their eyes to solve tasks big and small to help blind and low-vision people lead more independent lives.

As a blind or low-vision person, whenever you need visual assistance, our volunteers are happy to help. Through the live video call, you and a volunteer can communicate directly and solve a problem. The volunteer will help guide which direction to point your camera, what to focus on or when to turn on your torch.

As a sighted volunteer you can help just by installing the Be My Eyes app. A blind or a low-vision user may need help with anything from checking expiry dates, distinguishing colors, reading instructions or navigating new surroundings.

Digital Fraud Fighters are volunteers that will utilize fraud content shared by the AARP National Fraud Team to broadcast information across a multitude of digital platforms. Digital Fraud Fighters will help raise awareness of the latest scams targeting people of all ages with an emphasis on the 50+.

While the minimum expected time requirement is only 1-2 hours a week, you are invited to share as much content as you choose while you are online.

Today, digital technology makes it possible for people who believe in the Smithsonian mission to make significant contributions online. "Digital Volunteers" can now take on important assignments to expand access to the Smithsonian's massive collections, and can participate in a variety of research programs. Launched in July 2013, the Smithsonian Transcription Center seeks to engage the public in making our collections more accessible. Citizen scholars are invited to transcribe historic documents including diaries and working papers of prominent Americans and records associated with the Smithsonian's vast scientific collections. Transcription makes these important materials more accessible to researchers around the world, as well as the general public.

To date, more than ten thousand citizen scholars have come to the Transcription Center and engaged with the wide array of documents posted there by Smithsonian archivists and curators—from field notebooks surveying snakes and reptiles in South Dakota in 1894 to the diaries of Leo Baekeland, the American chemist and founder of the modern plastics industry.

The Smithsonian seeks digital volunteers to assist in contributing content to Wikipedia related to our collections and areas of expertise. What is New Beginnings?

New Beginnings is a jail-based program providing workforce and life development services, mentoring, and support to women in the Kent County, Ottawa County, and Muskegon County jails. The program's purpose is to reduce the likelihood that a woman will return to jail after release.

Why volunteer?

Volunteer mentors play a critical role in helping women successfully re-enter the community and avoid re-incarceration. Research shows a dramatic drop in the recidivism rate for women who have mentor support post-release. We offer extensive training for New Beginnings mentors, and we ask that mentors make a one-year commitment. Every woman participating in the program receives a trained female mentor. The participant and mentor develop a positive relationship that provides support while in jail and after release. New Beginnings mentors provide genuine, caring, non-judgmental support while also offering accountability as program participants work to achieve their goals.

The Locker is a not for profit thrift store serving Muskegon area families and individuals. Volunteers for The Locker will serve 2-3 hour shifts, 1-2 days a week, and can be expected to sort and hang donations, organize store displays, etc. Volunteers may also help with customer service if they are comfortable doing so.

The Locker is open Tuesday - Friday 10 -6 and Saturday 10 - 3. Volunteer shifts will be scheduled according to the volunteer's availability during business hours. Training will be provided to all volunteers.

As an MEC Math Corps Interventionist you’ll help kids develop basic math and problem-solving skills using evidence-based, scripted interventions. As an interventionist, you’ll help struggling students in 4-8 improve their skills and get on track with math. No experience? No problem. With great training and onsite coaching, we’ll prepare you to work with pairs of students to build fundamental math skills and confidence. Join the team that empowers Michigan kids to reach their highest level of academic achievement in reading and math.

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 37.5 hours per week. 7.5 service hours per day. Requires 5 days per week. Position starts 8/31/2024and ends 5/31/2025 (part time positions also available).

Compensation/Benefits: living stipend of $1,243.55 biweekly (totaling $2,487.10 per month), education award of up to $5,176.50 that can be used to repay federal student loans or future education expenses; federal student loan forbearance. Health insurance and childcare assistance is available for full-time interventionists. Interventionists may elect to complete their Michigan Youth Development Associate (Mi-YDA) credential. Michigan Education Corps AmeriCorps members also have access to the Member Support Fund (up to $500 for emergency /unexpected expenses), affinity groups and workforce development/career pathway groups.

Minimum qualifications:

Must be 18 years of age or older by your start date.

Must have at least a high school diploma or recognized equivalent by your start date.

Must be either a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.

Must pass mandatory pre-service background checks.

Must not have served 4 or more prior terms of service with AmeriCorps State or National.

As an interventionist, you’ll help students in kindergarten through third grade to become better readers using evidence-based, scripted interventions. With great training and onsite coaching, we’ll prepare you to work one-on-one or in small groups to help kids develop their reading skills and confidence! We are looking for people who have a desire to help kids succeed. Join the team that empowers Michigan kids to reach their highest level of academic achievement in reading and math.

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 37.5 hours per week. 7.5 service hours per day. Requires 5 days per week. Position starts 8/26/2024and ends 5/31/2025 (part time positions also available).

Compensation/Benefits: living stipend of $1,243.55 biweekly (totaling $2,487.10 per month), education award of up to $5,176.50 that can be used to repay federal student loans or future education expenses; federal student loan forbearance. Health insurance and childcare assistance is available for full-time interventionists. Interventionists may elect to complete their Michigan Youth Development Associate (Mi-YDA) credential. Michigan Education Corps AmeriCorps members also have access to the Member Support Fund (up to $500 for emergency /unexpected expenses), affinity groups and workforce development/career pathway groups.

Minimum required qualifications:

Must be 18 years of age or older by your start date.

Must have at least a high school diploma or recognized equivalent by your start date.

Must be either a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.

Must pass mandatory pre-service background checks.

As an Early Learning Corps Interventionist you’ll spend your days helping children ages 3-5 to talk, read, write, sing and play in order to develop early literacy and numeracy skills and get ready for Kindergarten. Serving in one classroom, you’ll work closely with a teacher to enhance daily literacy and numeracy activities and help students build both skills and confidence. With great training and onsite coaching, you’ll be ready to make an impact through enhanced opportunities to develop their early language, literacy and math skills. No experience? No problem. Join us as a volunteer mentor in our Early Math Program at Martin Luther King Elementary and make a real difference in the lives of children in Muskegon Heights. We are looking for volunteers for each classroom grades 3-5 at Dr. Martin Luther King Elementary 55 E Sherman BLVD, Muskegon, MI 49444. 

A love for working with young students. Great communication skills and the ability to work both independently and with others. Comfortable with technology or willing to learn. A supportive and encouraging approach to math.

An hour & a half (1.5) time commitment, 3 times a week, Monday-Friday. The students need this intervention each day for the program to be successful. We do ask that volunteers commit to an entire school year so that we can ensure the success of our students.

A commitment to completing our training (provided by the school and United Way of the Lakeshore). This training is about 1.5 hours and will walk you through the basics of the math program and the technology skills needed. Place, date and time of training will be determined with volunteers.

Background checks (no fee required). For the safety of our schools and you as a volunteer, you must complete two background checks - an initial check with United Way of the Lakeshore and then a secondary with each school site you plan to volunteer at. These background checks are covered by our organization and are of no fee to you!

We're looking for individuals and groups who are interesting in spending some time cleaning up our fields by pulling weeds! Having our rows weed-free helps keep our crops healthy and maintains the beauty of our space. Our farm team finds weeding to be a relaxing, meditative activity and a great way to connect with nature. This is an ongoing task around the farm, and repeat volunteers are very welcome!

Do you enjoy driving and connecting with people? Volunteer Drivers are needed to help individuals with disabilities access critical services, medical appointments, community events, and local resources. This is a meaningful way to support independence and inclusion for people with disabilities in West Michigan.

Volunteers use their own vehicles to provide safe, timely, and respectful transportation. Drivers must be willing to assist passengers as needed and maintain a friendly, respectful attitude at all times.

Front Desk Volunteers – Be the First Smile They See

Front Desk Volunteers serve as the first point of contact for visitors and callers at Disability Network West Michigan. This vital role helps create a welcoming, inclusive, and professional environment for everyone who walks through our doors or calls our office.

Volunteers also provide light administrative support, which may include copying, filing, assembling folders, and other tasks as needed.
