Who We Are

Mission: To support activities and projects that provide opportunities for the public to participate and observe environmental research and to provide environmental educational opportunities for students in the general Muskegon area.

The Muskegon Environmental Research & Education Society (MERES) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering environmental research, education, and restoration. Founded in 1996, MERES manages the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve, a sanctuary for wildlife and a hub for environmental education, serving thousands of students and visitors each year. Through the efforts of passionate volunteers and community support, MERES provides a space for learning, exploration, and the revitalization of Muskegon’s natural environment.

What We Do

MERES operates the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve, offering environmental educational opportunities to over 5,000 students annually and maintaining trails and facilities like the  Outdoor Classroom, the Al Bell Trail, the Fred Wilder Observation tower and the Wilder River Walk. These resources not only educate and engage the community but also contribute to the restoration of Muskegon’s environment. Relying solely on donations and grants, MERES ensures access to nature and environmental learning in the heart of an urban setting.
