Who We Are

Mission: To gather all persons interested in preserving family history and to assist members and friends of the society in the compilation of family histories and genealogical investigation.

Muskegon County Genealogical Society was founded in 1972. We do genealogy for many reasons. First is our curiosity about our ancestors – who were they, what were they like, what experiences did they live through. Our love of history is another reason we do genealogy. Also, our desire to solve mysteries is a huge part of our passion for genealogy. Finally, we do genealogy because we want our children, grandchildren and future generations to know and recognize the individuals over the centuries whose lives helped make us who we are today.

Our purpose is:

  • To gather people interested in genealogy and family history, with an emphasis on Muskegon County.
  • To promote genealogical research and public access to genealogical materials.
  • To teach members research methods, documentation standards, and other skills relevant to genealogy research.
  • To compile, index and publish Muskegon County genealogical data.
  • With our partner, Hackley Public Library – Torrent House, the Local History and Genealogy Department, we identify and determine the location, preservation, publication, and deposition of records of value to the genealogical community and public at large.

What We Do

We further our mission by seeking projects that can greatly benefit the residents of the county, their friends and relatives worldwide, that also benefits local governments and private agencies. The society pulls together its members, nonmembers, businesses and agencies and volunteers related to the project, to make it the most useful to everyone that uses it.
