Who We Are

Mission: To positively impact the lives of adults through improved literacy.

One in six adults in the United States is functionally illiterate, reading at or below the 4th grade level. In Muskegon County, that translates to more than 21,000 adults. The adverse effects of illiteracy are felt in our economic, education, criminal justice, and healthcare systems. Read Muskegon is breaking the generational cycle of illiteracy by providing customized programs that meet the unique needs of our learners and building community partnerships to maximize our impact.

What We Do

Read Muskegon provides:

  • Adult literacy programs that offer one-on-one tutoring and group classes for adults who struggle with reading, writing, and comprehension.
  • Family literacy initiatives that engage parents and children in activities designed to build reading skills and foster a love of learning within families.
  • Workplace literacy programs to help employees improve their reading and communication skills, which can enhance job performance and career advancement.
  • Prison and jail literacy programs that offer educational opportunities to incarcerated individuals, helping them improve their literacy skills as a step toward rehabilitation.
  • Early childhood literacy support, including book distribution and reading programs for young children, aiming to address literacy challenges at a young age.

Through these efforts, Read Muskegon works to break the cycle of illiteracy, empowering individuals and families with the skills they need to achieve personal, professional, and educational success.
